The restrained and suspenseful first act of THE INFERNAL MACHINE is propelled by Guy Pearce’s thoughtful portrayal of tortured novelist Bruce Cogburn. Unfortunately, the script’s third act becomes cryptically obtuse rather than dynamically charged before it completely goes off the rails into a flight of hyperbolic fancy that leaves us gasping in confusion and annoyance cannot be made up for by Pearce’s excellent performance as Cogburn slowly unravels from years of guilt.
